“We confirm your entry for Ironman UK on 4th August 2013.”  As they say in the USA, ‘now this shit’s gettin’ real.’  I’m entered.  Paid up.  And so the countdown begins …

By the end of this year I want to be at a good level of base fitness, then in January the 30 week Ironman training plan begins (I’m following a plan from the Don Fink book).  Perfect timing, just after New Year.  It’s going to be a real adventure, and I’ll be covering the highs and lows on this blog.

I’m one of those people for whom actually being entered into an event makes it all seem more real.  When I decided to do my first marathon I printed out the form, wrote a cheque, and walked to the postbox at 11:30 one evening to post it.  That felt good, and on the walk back home I was extremely excited.

I feel the same way now.  First comment when I announced it on Facebook was, ‘You fucking mad?’  Well, no, I don’t think so … but maybe there is an element of madness about entering the single most challenging one-day endurance event in the world.

If so, have me committed.  It’s going to be epic!

  1. I’m in the same boat. I was on my computer before work at 9am to register. It’s my first Ironman and I’m going to follow the Don Fink book. I purchased a copy from amazon last night after reading lot’s of good reviews. I think I’ll go with the intermediate plan but not sure how I’ll be with the slow base training.

I’m itching to get started after Xmas!!!

Oh and I have my first child a baby boy on the way Dec 30th.

2013 is gonna be a great year :0)

    • It’s my first one too, Dean. I’m using Fink as well, it’s an excellent book. Slow base training is essential for building endurance, but I agree it’ll feel strange initially … almost walking on some of those initial ‘runs’.

Why wait til after Xmas, I’m training hard now for other races.

And congrats! A good year indeed.
